Linux introduction for beginners
The introduction to Linux
Who invented Linux?
Linux was developed in 1991 by a Finnish programmer Linus Torvalds. Linus was a university student then, desiring to create a free substitute to the MINIX operating system (taught).
He published the first version of the Linux kernel (the fundamental part of the operating system) where the same was made to be open-source and everybody could work on it and enhance it. Since then thousands of developers around the world have contributed to it making Linux what it is today.
What is so Special about Linux?
Open-source → Giving one freedom to use and change things.
Secure → High user permit system
Reliable Stable Dominant in servers around the world.
Portable → It can run on just about any hardware.
Community-driven (million of contributors).
Linux Flavors:
Linux itself consists of only the kernel To allow it to be used different organizations and communities build addons to it such as software and tools and this is what we call Linux Distributions (Distros).
Likely flavors of Linux
- Ubuntu -Easy to use, suitable to new users, extensive community support.
- Debian - Stable and reliable, the foundation in Ubuntu.
- Fedora -Red Hat backing: leading-edge technology.
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Commercial, used mostly in business.
- CentOS / Rocky Linux - Free substitute of RHEL, which is popular in servers.
- Arch Linux - Very small and customizable, and is based on more complicated functions.
- Linux Mint - Its simple to use and made by people who left windows.
- Kali Linux -Imperative security, ethical hacking and penetration testing.
What Areas Does Linux Have Usage?
- Servers and Data Centers - The vast majority of websites that you visit run Linux.
- Android Smartphones- Linux kernel based.
- Supercomputers -Nearly all the top 500 supercomputers are Linux powered.
- IoT & Smart Devices Routers, TVs, smartwatches.
- Cloud Computing The likes of AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure all run on Linux.
